We all want glowing, flawless skin. And, why not? When so many can have smooth skin, I believe everyone should have. And, trust me, it’s possible. Yes, you can also flaunt your skin now without any hesitation. So be ready to get lovely comments from your near and dear ones.
One thing I must say is that when it comes to skincare, everyone has their own suggestions, including home remedies and trusted products. For example, try raw milk, use cucumber for your eyes, or always wash your face with aloe vera, we all have such people in our lives, isn’t it? Honestly, this is one of the things that we are always chasing to look younger, better, and more beautiful every day.
But, First We Shoud Know Why Our Skin Becomes Rough
We should be aware that whatever we do and go through in our everyday lives affects our skin. Now let’s go down to some of the most common harmful agents for our skin like pollution, sun damage, and obviously stress.
These attack skin most leading to wrinkles, spots, and sagging in the long run. Rough skin is usually caused due to dryness and dehydration.
If you feel the texture changing only suddenly then it can be the weather or the changing season. The environment and the climate have a huge impact on our skin. So much that you can experience a change in your skin even after a vacation.
The skin has a feature where it can naturally balance the oil and water and keep the hydration process intact. However, if there are external factors affecting the skin, this process may not work very effectively. Another important aspect is our lifestyle.
How much sleep do you get, what do you eat, and do you drink or smoke? These are just some factors that overall contribute to making your skin more prone to roughness. If you have any skin diseases like eczema or keratosis, makes you more susceptible to rough skin. Sometimes even genetic flaws can affect the skin quality in spite of your rigorous skincare routine.
The Icy Whiz team talked to Christin Powell, the Co-Founder and CEO of Kinship, about different approaches and challenges to achieve smooth skin. Here is what she said:
“As a skin chemist and the Co-Founder & CEO of Kinship (a clean, science-backed skincare brand for sensitive skin), I know what works for one person might not work for another.
The key step to achieving smooth skin is understanding your unique skin type and using suitable products. Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Sensitive Skin: Prone to stinging or burning after using products. Look for formulas free of synthetic fragrances, and synthetic dyes, and that are pH-balanced (maintain a minimum pH of 3.5). Exfoliate with gentle enzymes versus glycolic acid or physical beads
- Normal Skin: Appears clear and balanced, with no major sensitivity issues. You have more flexibility but still prioritize gentle products free of synthetic fragrances.
- Dry Skin: Often feels flaky, itchy, or rough. Look for products with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or coconut water.
- Oily Skin: Notably shiny and prone to excess oil. Choose lightweight, oil-free, and gel-based products.
- Combination Skin: A mix of dry and oily zones on the face. This requires a targeted approach. Use oil-free products on oil-prone areas like the T-zone, and richer, hydrating products on dry areas like the cheeks.
Once you know your skin type, start a simple routine: gently cleanse, moisturize consistently, and exfoliate as needed. And be consistent with this routine!
Also, whatever your skin, it’s best to choose gentle, plant-based, and scientifically proven effective skincare products that are cruelty-free, especially for those who are new to skincare.”
I’ll Give You Some Tips to Get Smooth Skin
Now if we start enlisting there can be a lot of things that one can do to ensure that they have smooth skin. But the biggest question here is whether it will be effective for everyone.
Well, the problem is that even for very generic remedies there can be people who have skin sensitivity to very common ingredients used in skincare, they might be having overly reactive skin or some other issues.
So, there is no sure shot method to crack how to get smooth skin. But, I’ll tell you some basic tips that anyone can follow. Believe me, this works-
1. Wash Your Face
Always wash your face when you have been out in the sun or in pollution for a long. At the end of the day no matter what, wash your face, even if you have been indoors all day, use a soft and gentle face cleanser for it.
Do not use very hot water, try to use cold or lukewarm water as it is better for the natural cleansing mechanism of your body and doesn’t wash off the required oils.
Washing your face ensures that any dust, unwanted oils, or any other particle that could disrupt your skin has been removed. It also makes you feel fresh.
2. Moisturization
The second most important thing to remember is that your skin needs moisturization and that too constantly. Because dry skin easily becomes textured or rough.
Different types of products, like creams, lotions, or moisturizers can be used based on your preferences and the body part you want to use them for. Many studies show that applying moisturization every day can reduce skin dryness as well as oiliness, thus preventing acne in the long run.
Make sure to check your skin type before you buy them, and even if you have oily skin make sure to use oil-free moisturizers as it is necessary for the sebum production in your body.
Whenever you are following any hair removal process follow the necessary steps before and after it.
If the skin is not prepared before then the hair removal process can be difficult and painful affecting your skin. And after hair removal, if it is not followed by proper cleaning and hydration it might become dry and cracked. So, once you remove body hair, make sure to wash it and moisturize well.
3. Wear Sunscreen
Never skip a day of sunscreen and sun protection. I highly recommend you use a high SPF broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects your skin from scorching sun rays, ultraviolet radiations as well as skin cancer.
Studies show that with regular use of sunscreen, squamous cell carcinoma is reduced by 40 percent over four years.
If you’re stepping out in the sun try to keep your exposed body parts covered so that you have a good sun protection.
Dr. T.N Rekha Singh, Certified Dermatologist at Oliva Skin and Hair Clinic, talked to the Icy Whiz team about achieving smooth skin for different skin types. Here is what she had to say:
“It’s crucial to recognize that skin types vary significantly among individuals. This understanding forms the foundation for any skincare regimen aiming for smooth skin.
Identifying your skin type, whether oily, dry, combination, or sensitive, is essential for selecting the right skincare products and routines.
Hydration and Nutrition
- Internal Hydration: Adequate water intake is essential for maintaining the skin’s elasticity and smoothness. It helps to flush out toxins and ensures the skin remains hydrated.
- Balanced Diet: A diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants can significantly impact skin health. Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and walnuts, and those rich in vitamins A, C, and E, play a key role in skin repair and regeneration.
Sun Protection
A daily sunscreen regimen is critical in protecting the skin from harmful UV rays, which can cause premature aging and texture irregularities. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and reapply regularly when exposed to sun for prolonged periods.
Gentle Skincare Practices
- Cleansing: Choose gentle, non-abrasive cleansers that do not strip the skin of its natural oils. Overwashing or using harsh products can lead to dryness and irritation, exacerbating skin texture issues.
- Exfoliation: Regular, gentle exfoliation can remove dead skin cells and promote a smoother skin surface. However, it is essential to not over-exfoliate, as this can damage the skin barrier and lead to sensitivity.
Consistent Skincare Routine
Developing and adhering to a consistent skincare routine that addresses your specific skin concerns is vital.
After consulting with a professional to ensure they are appropriate for your skin type, incorporate products with active ingredients that target texture, such as retinol for cell turnover or hyaluronic acid for hydration.
Navigating Skincare Advice and Products
With the overwhelming array of skincare advice and products available, it is advised to focus on evidence-based practices and ingredients with proven efficacy.”
4. Drink Plenty of Water
The next essential thing you need to remember is to drink plenty of water. And trust me, this is literally the easiest way to prevent dry skin. Along with it if you consume good and healthy fats like those found in nuts and avocados you will have better-nourished skin. They will help to keep it supple and moisturized and that is how you get smooth skin.
We interviewed Catherine Rall, Certified Nutritionist, Happy V, on the importance of nutrition for achieving smooth skin. Here is an excerpt from the interview:
“Perhaps no aspect of nutrition is more important to your skin health than proper hydration.
When you’re well-hydrated, your skin will be smoother and less wrinkled, and your body will more easily be able to purge waste products and renew dead cells, all of which will help your skin look its best.
Essential nutrients to target on top of this include vitamin E and especially collagen protein.”
I told you many parameters for how our skin gets dry or rough. I think now you have a fair understanding of what standard practices one should follow to keep the skin hydrated and nourished.
Adding further, I must say that there can be a lot of other ways too. These are exfoliating timely to remove dead cells, using specialized body care like products with vitamin C, or the use of retinol-based products and AHA on the skin.
What should be kept in mind however is that any of these should be done only after consulting your dermatologist to make sure that it does not have any ill effect on your skin. I hope this article will help you with skin care and your skin also shines beautifully.
