Music is something we all love, but have you ever wondered what actually goes into making it? Have you ever thought about the forms of music, or for that matter do you even know what really is the meaning of form in music?
Actually, many people are fond of different forms of music but they literally don’t know about it. And they don’t even get enough time to explore. Here I’ll tell you some basic things about the music forms. So, for starters, you should know that any music contains five basic elements. These are- Rhythm, Melody, Timbre, Form, and Harmony.
The form is one of the most important elements that we are going to learn about in this article.
I’ll Tell You First About the Form in Music
How a musical composition is designed is essentially the form in music, basically the architecture of the song. Now many people do not understand this and listen to any kind of music mindlessly, but in its very true essence, every kind of music has its own form be it a tune or a symphony.
Now getting this understanding of music forms, you can be a mindful and informed listener and will eventually understand the compositions better.
Forms in music are a useful tool to make it smooth and melodious. This is because it’s kind of a joining link between all the sections and chords; so that everything falls in place with the lyrics and the final song is a perfect piece of music. So, in this sense, it basically gives structure to a song which can be done by assigning alphabets like A, B, C, D, and so on.
To analyze the form of a song you have to place it in a given prototype and then repetitive parts are tagged in the same alphabet. In a song, if the verse goes by letter A, and the chorus is different from the verse it will go by letter B.
And in the rest of the song we will have to pick which part falls under A and which under B, and finally build the form of that song by tagging them.
Now, Read About These Different Forms of Music
There are many different types of forms of music that help composers to produce various types of music. Using these forms you can have different genres of music, which could actually yield different emotions out of you. I’ll tell you about different forms in short.
1. Strophic Form
The most simple form is the strophic form, it basically just implies repetition in a song. So, the entire song has the same melody or it is placed in a repetitive manner.
2. Binary Form
After the strophic form in music, we have the binary form. This is supposed to have two sections. This implies that it is a very verse and chorus kind of setting, in which both are different from one another.
3. Ternary Form
Just like binary, ternary no has three parts which are usually ABA. The first part is the A, next is B which is the new part and the form completes by repeated A.
4. Rondo Form
Rondo is the next structure we need to discuss. It basically alternates between two sections. One is central and another is the contrasting section. The most commonly used Rondo form in music goes by A-B-A-C-A-B-A, where A is the central theme and B, C are the contrasting sections.
5. Arch Form
Arch form is a structure of music that is based on repetition but in reverse order, of almost all the sections such that the entire song when looked at once becomes symmetrical and moves around the central movement form. Usually, this form can be described as A-B-C-B-A.
6. Sonata Form
Sonata form is pretty complicated as some say because it is usually a combination of an exposition, development, recapitulation, and coda. Exposition implies introducing themes that are gradually developed, development means basically a transition between themes and recapitulation implying the restatement of the themes, and the coda kind of clearly implies a conclusion.
7. Medley Form
The Medley form is also known as the chain form. In this, the structure is such that no two parts are similar to each other. So, either it is a completely different song or it has immediate repeats. Examples of these can be ABCD or AABBCCDD. The Through – Composed form is somewhat similar to the medley form since it also has no melodic similarities.
To actually wrap up the list I can say that it really ends here. But, then we need to put in perspective the influence of Western music in the same which in turn has given rise to a few other forms like the sectional, extended, and compound forms.
The Icy Whiz team talked to Andres del Castillo, Senior Producer at r+d creative inc., about how understanding the forms of music enhances your appreciation of a musical composition. Here is what he said:
“Double-edged sword. It helps to visualize the theory behind something that moves you and to mentally bank it. Also, to understand how the composer achieved his or her creative goal.
It can also get in the way of a pure appreciation for the music. Knowing the optical mechanics of a rainbow diminishes the sheer beauty and wonder of the phenomenon.”
As we normally learn or write any language and follow some rules for it, forms have essentially the same place when it comes to music. And like the rules for any language allow you to put a particular grammatical thing at any particular place, music has forms that dictate how the punctuation of music works.
I hope now you have a better knowledge of these forms. And I’m sure that now whenever you’ll listen to any song or music; you will once think about forms.
